Bioplastics, Novamont awarded


The award "European Inventor of the Year" by the European Commission and the European Patent Office went to Bastioli, CEO of Novamont regarding the category of small and medium enterprises. Deserved recognition thanks to the invention of biodegradable plastics obtained from corn, by-product patent Mater-Bi.

Under the brand name Mater-Bi, the factory produces and markets several lines of biopolymers completely biodegradable in different environments, such as in composting and soil. Many areas of use: from the shopper bags for collecting waste from food trays to diapers, from cutlery to dishes to glasses.

According to the accounts of farmers Coldiretti bioplastics could prevent the dispersion in the European Union each year to one million tons of plastic, to reduce 1.4 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions and save 700 thousand tons of oil, only replacing the standard plastic grocery bags. Just last October, the Confederation Novamont and signed an agreement that led to the creation of a biorefinery in Terni.
