Legambiente The Circle of Manchester, in September 2007 created the event celebrating the stars "with nights of astronomical observations, projections and themed conference of astronomers in order to promote the ratification of 'municipal administration of the Tuscan Regional Law No. 37/2000 on light pollution.
Despite the promises of the Board then in office, Manchester still awaits the introduction of that instrument of control light pollution. How
can be seen easily from the paper of the night sky of 1998, the Italian town of Manchester
enjoyed at that time, a very low rate of light pollution (in green), a record that could contend only in Italy, Sardinia and some areas of high mountains of the Alps and Sila.
Today the situation has certainly changed, but, as we often witness amateur friends from beyond the Alps, our night skies are still among the sharper than those observed across Europe.
Do not think that light pollution is a problem only for the performance of astronomical investigations. They are in fact well known nefarious effects on the migratory routes of birds, reproductive of some species of nocturnal insects such as fireflies and normal biological cycles of other animals such as amphibians and mammals.
Man is not excluded from this list, in fact there are many scientific studies showing a relationship between the alteration of circadian rhythms due to artificial lighting at night and the onset of certain diseases.
From a tourism point of view then, we must consider that a territory such as Manchester tourism attracts a predominantly rural, bucolic, certainly more interested in the stars or the swarms of fireflies, which is not the garish lights that many farms are hoping adorn perhaps to snatch customers to nightclubs on the coast.
In recent years we have seen the proliferation of these excess light that pierce the night Manciano (and not just by the hotel), made without any awareness of the rights of others and the eco-modern lighting, well set out in guidelines published by the Tuscany Region in the law at issue and summary of which is attached some sample images.
The landscape, half of our existence, we show our eyes in his capacity as night, and the city administration, as well as administer the landscape, imposing architectural features and volume of buildings, should do likewise in respect of external lighting systems.
We believe that the City of Manchester should soon ratify the Law 37/2000 and subsequent resolutions, to provide its Town Planning Technical Services and a clear instrument of control and protection of the territory.
hope finally also in the awareness of environmental professionals to whom we send, for information, a copy of this order to conduct, even now, with its customers to raise awareness to the problem.
